2016 Tree Sale
It is tree sale time! We have ordered large quantities of trees to sell. We will have three different varieties this year for everyone to choose from. The species that we have ordered are: White Pine, Norway Spruce and Bur Oak.
The White Pine and the Norway Spruce make a very good windbreak, They both grow relatively fast and have a fairly good survival rate. They grow to about 40 feet and can spread from 10-15 feet. They grow in ordinary soil but also do well in wet soils. These can be used for windbreaks if planted 8-10 feet apart.
The Bur Oak are medium size to large trees. They can grow 70-80 feet or larger if left untended. This tree features alternating leaves that are 6-12 inch long with 5-9 lobes separated about halfway down by a pair of particularly deep sinuses. They yield acorns that are larger than most others plus could live over 200-300 years. The acorns are a preferred food for wood ducks, wild turkeys, deer, rabbits and other animals. This tree prefers wet soils but is also tolerant of drought conditions.
Now for the most important part: In the past we had you pay for the trees when you picked them up but policies have changed and we really need you to pay for the trees when the order is placed. So, if you go online and order the trees either come by the office and pay for them or mail us a check. We can now also take credit cards* if that is more convenient for you. Just stop by the office and Karen or Tony can take your payment.
We take orders until all the trees are gone, so call early to make sure that you get what you want. We will call when the trees arrive, which should be around April 7th. If you have any questions, or are interested in purchasing trees pleases contact Karen or Tony at the Fayette County SWCD at 618-283-1095 ext. 3. Thank you in advance for your order.
*Example of credit card orders. As an added benefit we can now except credit cards if you come into the office to place your order and pay, but there is a small additional fee of 3% per order. So, you would be charged an additional .30 per $10 you order.
